Abstract

This study aimed to identify the frequency spectrum characteristics of forest healing spaces and examine their associations with key acoustic and psychoacoustic indices, thereby proposing healing program applications suitable for each spatial type. Field measurements were conducted at 14 sites within the forest healing area of the Jeollanam-do Forest Research Institute across four seasonal campaigns (April, August, and November 2024, and January 2025). The collected sound data were analyzed using 1/3 octave band (50–5,000 Hz) frequency spectra together with eight frequency-related acoustic and psychoacoustic indices (Leq, L90, SD, REm, G, Loudness, Sharpness, UA) to compare auditory characteristics by season and spatial type (Entry, Grove, Forest). Results revealed a gradual auditory transition along the Entry–Grove–Forest gradient from lowfrequency, activity-oriented environments to high-frequency, nature-dominant tranquil environments. The Entry zone was characterized by high low-frequency (50–250 Hz) levels and variability (Leq, SD), suggesting greater suitability for activity-focused programs such as exercise therapy. The Grove zone exhibited a transitional sound environment with stable mid-frequency components (250–2,000 Hz), higher REm, and a smaller Leq–L90 difference, indicating relatively stable conditions and high applicability for programs such as phytotherapy, hydrotherapy, and diet therapy. The Forest zone showed a greater proportion of high-frequency components (2–4 kHz), accompanied by higher Sharpness and G, supporting the applicability of calm and meditative programs. By integrating frequency spectrum analysis with acoustic and psychoacoustic metrics, this study provides a quantitative basis for interpreting auditory environments in forest healing spaces and offers foundational evidence for soundscape-informed program placement in planning, design, and management.
