Abstract

Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site along with Bulguksa Temple in December 1995, Seokguram Grotto in Gyeongju has drawn great attention from across the world for its fine sculptural techniques and its realistic representation of the Buddha. A wide array of doctrines, such as the the Lotus Sutra(法華), the Hwaeom (華 嚴) Sutra, esoteric Buddhism (密敎) and the Pure Land Faith (淨土思想), have been seen as the primary philosophical foundations of the establishment of Seokguram. As such, various studies have characterized the Principal Statue of Buddha in differing ways – as Sakyamuni, Amitabha or Vairocana. In this context, it is reasonable to suppose that the motivation behind the building of Seokguram lay in more than one Buddhist scripture. Generally, mandalas were understood as diagrams that depict the principles of esoteric Buddhism. But other kinds of Buddhist paintings such as those of the Amitabha Assembly and the Gwangyeon Byunsangdo (Pure Land Mandala), and the preachings contained in the Hwaeom Sutra (Hwaeom Mandala) and the Vulture Peak Assembly (Lotus Sutra Mandala), are also often considered to be mandalas. Although they have different iconographic characteristics than the mandalas of esoteric Buddhism that portray the Two Buddhist Ways (兩界) -Taejanggye (胎藏界) and Geumganggye (金剛界)- they can also be categorized as mandalas of Hyungyo (顯敎), the sect that abided by the preachings of Sakyamuni Buddha, for they share the fundamental properties of mandalas such as spatiality, plurality, centrality and symmetricality. This paper offers a new construal of the 38 sculptures in Seokguram based on the painting of the preaching of Buddha at the Vulture Peak Assembly described in The Sutra of the Lotus, and is a rethinking of the stone architecture of Seokguram as a mandala-structured echo of the Vulture Peak Assembly.
