Abstract

This study analyses the pictorial image of the Eleven-Headed Avalokitesvarain the Seokguram Grotto. This study further investigates the meaning of theEleven-Headed Avalokitesvara. It is a piece of statue with 11 faces on thehead. It is located behind the main Buddha statue, which would be the mostsignificant place in the Seokguram Grotto. The shape of the 11 faces Bodhisattva is considered to be originated fromthe 11 Rudras of ancient India (the Vedic period). In the point of Buddhist, thenumber 11 in the 11 faces Bodhisattva is closely related to the concept of “10directions”. The number 10 symbolizes all directions and is considered as theperfect number. According to Buddhist scriptures and their interpretations, the11 faces Bodhisattva has in fact 12 faces (the true face together with 11 faces toall directions). The ultimate stage of Bodhisattva practice is represented by thetop Buddha face (having the 10 Grounds of Bodhisattva way to theBuddhahood, achieving ‘unsurpassed enlightenment and equanimity’ (theperfectly enlightened One). ‘Things’ held by the Eleven-Headed Avalokitesvara are a string of beads onthe right hand and a Kundika on the left hand. These ‘things’ indicateBodhisattva practice and its different stages. The Eleven-Headed Avalokitesvarawas widespread during the Tang dynasty, China, due to the support fromEmperor Gaozong of Tang and Empress Wu for Esoteric Buddhism andactivities by Fazang (643–712), the third patriarchs of the Huayan school. The11 faces Bodhisattva was perceived as a symbol of defending the fatherland against enemies. Furthermore, the 11 faces Bodhisattva was the main Buddha(replaceable of Virochana Buddha) forming one of three saints along withManjushri Bodhisattva and Samantabhadra. Hence, the 11 faces Bodhisattvaincorporated the view of the Huayan school and Protocols of EsotericBuddhism. In the Huayan school Fazang and Uisang (625-702) shared their utopianideology that the world could be prosperous under Buddhism. Theircommunication influenced the Buddhist community of the 8th century Silla. Fazang used the symbolic function of a guardian deity associated with the 11faces Bodhisattva in order to harmonize (or integrate) the ideal Huayan worldwith the religion in reality. Likewise, the Eleven-Headed Avalokitesvara in theSeokguram Grotto was associated with the harmony between the real worldand Huayan world, representing Bodhisattva, the defence of the fatherland, and the enlightenment of Virochana Buddha.
