Abstract

This study aims to analyze the preface and epilogue of Nanhakmong(鸞鶴夢), a classic novel written by Jeong Tae-un (鄭泰運, 1849–1909) in 1871, to explore its literary characteristics and the author's creative consciousness. Nanhakmong goes beyond a simple moral dichotomy of good and evil, emphasizing the process through which a character attains moral perfection through trials. The preface highlights the inherent goodness of human nature and the importance of maintaining moral convictions. The epilogue underscores the inevitability of retribution for good and evil, revealing the novel’s intent to provide ethical lessons within a Confucian moral framework. Additionally, through the term 'Munse (文勢)', the author demonstrates an attempt to adopt traditional novelistic conventions while also introducing variations within them. The structure and content of the work are closely linked to Jeong Tae-un’s personal life. As a member of a fallen aristocratic family, he faced hardships, particularly after the death of his parents, which occurred just before he wrote Nanhakmong. The imagery of 'Songbaekhujo (松柏後凋)' in the preface, referring to the resilience of pine and cypress trees even in harsh conditions, reflects his determination to uphold moral convictions despite adversity.
