Abstract
Wolchon Ha Dal-hong was a Confucian scholar and literary figure from Hadong during the late Joseon Dynasty. His courtesy name was Yunyeo (潤汝), and his pen name was Wolchon (月村). He was born on April 28, 1809, in Okjong, Hadong, and passed away at the age of 69 on December 15, 1877. His family followed the academic tradition of Nammyung (南冥), and he personally admired and studied under Nammyung and Gyeomjae Ha Hong-do. He emphasized the importance of Nammyung’s philosophy to his disciples, contributing to the revival of Nammyung studies in Hadong and Jinju. At the age of 12, he demonstrated his literary talent at the Baekiljang (백일장) in Deokwon and gained recognition for his abilities. Ha Woo-seon praised him for having the stature of a distinguished writer, while Yang Ui-young commended his writing as refined and elegant, worthy of serving as a model for others. Jo Seong-ga noted that Ha Dal-hong’s poetry was passed down among younger generations. Additionally, he compiled Palga Yeongseon (팔가영선), a literary anthology that provided normative guidance to local writers, thereby playing the role of a literary mentor. Ha Dal-hong believed that literature should serve as a vehicle for conveying moral principles. He regarded the literary styles of the Three Dynasties (三代) and the Han-Tang (漢唐) period as their golden age but viewed the post-Song era as a period of decline in literary traditions. In prose writing, he emphasized classical Chinese literature (古文), and in poetry, he prioritized meaning over mere stylistic embellishment. Thus, he criticized the tendency to pursue novelty or excessive ornamentation in literary creation. His poetry reflects self-examination and remorse while also demonstrating a commitment to leading a meaningful life. It conveys a longing to escape worldly concerns through scenic travels and purification of the mind. He vividly depicted the hardships of rural peasants and exposed the suffering caused by corrupt government officials. Furthermore, he condemned Western imperial powers for their economic exploitation of Joseon and criticized the complacency of government officials who failed to respond appropriately to the shifting international landscape. These poetic characteristics highlight both his literary prowess and his deep social consciousness. He actively practiced his belief that literature is a jaedo jigi (載道之器), meaning "a vessel for carrying the Way," and his works embody this principle, making them significant in literary history.
