중공군 제4차 공세에 관한 주요 쟁점과 평가

초록

1951년 2월 11일 감행된 중공군 제4차 공세에 관한 기존 연구는 패배한 ‘횡성전투’와 승리한 ‘지평리전투’로 구분되어 서술되었다. 그러나 최근 학계에 등장하고 있는 중국 측 기록과의 교차 분석을 통하여 제4차 공세에 대한 재론의 필요성이 제기되고 있다. 이러한 맥락에서 본 연구는 기존 6·25전쟁 공간사에 서술된 제4차 공세에 대하여 최근 등장한 공산 측 자료를 중심으로 새로운 해석을 시도하였다. 본 연구에서 제시하는 제4차 공세에 대한 새로운 평가는 다음 세 가지 쟁점을 중심으로 이루어졌다. 첫째, 제4차 공세는 동년 1월 15일부터 시행된 유엔군 측의 위력수색작전과 반격작전에 대응하여 ‘공세주도권’ 유지와 ‘춘계대공세’ 준비라는 딜레마를 안고 진행되었다. 둘째, 제4차 공세는 앞선 3차례의 공세에서 유엔군을 압도할 수 있었던 중공군의 절대적인 수적 우위를 포기한 최초의 공세작전이었다. 아울러 국군 제8사단이 와해할 정도로 큰 피해를 입었던 횡성전투는 유엔군의 ‘전투 패배’와 중공군의 ‘작전적 실패’가 공존하고 있다. 셋째, 지평리에서 중공군의 패배 요인을 5가지 측면에서 분석하였다. 상기 연구를 통해 중공군 제4차 공세를 새로운 시각으로 재론함으로써 추후 중공군 제4차 공세에 대한 새로운 전투사적 평가가 이루어지길 바란다.

Abstract

Existing studies on the 4th Offensive launched on February 11, 1951, have been described by dividing it into the defeated ‘the battle of Hoeng-seong’ and the victorious ‘the battle of Jipyeongri’. However, recent cross-analysis with Chinese records emerging in academia suggests the need for a reassessment of the 4th Offensive. In this context, this study attempts to offer new interpretations of the Fourth Offensive described in the official publication history of the Korean War, focusing on recently surfaced communist materials. This study presents a new evaluation of the Fourth Offensive, focusing on the following three key issues. First, the Fourth Offensive was carried out under the dilemma of maintaining the “initiative in the offensive” and preparing for the “Spring Offensive” in response to the United Nations forces’ powerful reconnaissance operations and counteroffensive that began on January 15 of the same year. Second, the Fourth Offensive marked the first operational campaign where the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army (CPVA) abandoned its overwhelming numerical superiority, which had previously allowed them to dominate the United Nations forces in the first three offensives. Additionally, the Battle of Hoengseong, which inflicted significant damage on the Republic of Korea Army’s 8th Division to the point of disintegration, demonstrates a coexistence of the United Nations forces’ “tactical defeat” and the CPVA’s “operational failure.” Third, the factors contributing to the CPVA’s defeat at the Battle of Chipyong-ni were analyzed from five perspectives. Through this study, it is hoped that the Fourth Offensive of the CPVA will be reconsidered from a new perspective, paving the way for a renewed historiographical evaluation of the campaign in the future.
