Abstract

This study examines the consolidation of citizen-led square politics through the case of the protest movement demanding the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol, which began in late 2024. Since Korea’s institutional democratization, the nature of square politics has evolved from organization-led mobilization to spontaneous, citizen-driven participation. The recent protests mark a stage in which square politics has become a socially recognized and widely accepted form of civic action. They are characterized by spatial and political decentralization, creative cultural expression, and safety-oriented strategies for minimizing risk—features that enabled broad, sustained participation and tangible political outcomes. These characteristics— decentralization, risk-avoidance strategies, and political effectiveness—constitute the core elements of the hidden transcript of resistance, indicating that the consolidation of citizen-led square politics represents a phase where this hidden transcript becomes spatially and collectively visible. By integrating temporal and spatial dimensions, this research extends prior studies that have treated the temporality and spatiality of square politics separately, situating current practices within both their historical evolution and contemporary meaning.
