Abstract

This study examines how various human and non-human entities act as agents in the place-making of the square. The research looks at the case of the presidential impeachment protests in South Korea, from December 2024 to April 2025. The study focuses on how the square had been made during collective demonstrations, highlighting how diverse actors - bodies, objects, and the built environment - jointly shaped the square through material and sensory practices. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, mental mapping, and participant observation, and were analyzed using the concept of ‘square-making’. The findings of this study are twofold. First, participants’ bodies functioned as material actors that secured and structured the protest space. Their bodily presence and movement were recognized as part of the process of constituting and maintaining the square, while interactions with the built environment dynamically reconfigured spatial boundaries. Second, material objects - such as lightsticks, flags, and tents - functioned as material actors that embodied messages, mobilized participation, and fostered a shared affective atmosphere. Through the accumulation of material-based sensory practices and interactions, the protest moved beyond a temporary act and became constituted as a “square”.
