Abstract

Learners can effectively interact with peers beyond the limitations of time and space in the online learning environment. Although learners participate in online collaborative learning mainly through verbal communication, a few tasks like design problems require students to jointly create and modify visual representations. For the tasks, visualization tools have been developed in the online learning environment. This study aims to explore how learners jointly conduct a design task with a visualization tool in synchronous online collaborative learning through analyzing learners’ interaction patterns and their difficulties in collaboration. In this study, undergraduates participated in a group of three at a laboratory environment. Through analyzing collaborative learning process, this study found that verbal interaction was paralleled by a group work with the visualization tool. In addition, cognitive and metacognitive interactions were constantly repeated in online collaborative learning process. Learners used the visualization tool for building shared mental models and carried out the design task through collaboration rather than division of labor. Nevertheless, learners had difficulty in elaborating and challenging arguments, equally participating in collaboration, understanding effective collaborative learning process, and jointly revising group outputs in the online environment. To address these difficulties, future research should develop tools and strategies to continuously monitor the needs of learners and provide adaptive supports at the right time in online collaborative learning with the visualization tool.
