Abstract

This study examined the relationship between learner's pre-class learning and learner's participation in the context of college class integrating flipped learning and Team-Based Learning model. Pre-class learning was measured by learner's quiz score, and participation was calculated by each learner's utterance in team readiness assurance test(tRAT). The mean frequency of utterances of individual students was 25.3 times, and the average amount of utterance was about 111 words. The average amount of utterance per turn taking was 3.9 words. Categories were identified based on content analysis of the utterances. The most frequent types of utterance were discussion leading/management, opinion/rationale, and emotional exchange. In terms of the length of utterance, discussion leading/management was the highest, followed by opinion/rationale, and in-depth discussion. The degree of pre-class learning showed a statistically significant positive correlation with the frequency of utterances, length of utterances, and the average length of utterances. By type of utterance, there was a positive correlation between pre-class learning and opinion/rationale, in-depth discussion, and active reaction. The results of this study suggest that effective design for pre-class learning in a flipped classroom and TBL is critical to facilitate learners' participation in team activities to ensure quality of learning.
