Abstract
This study critically examines how the Netflix series One Hundred Years of Solitude (2024) visually reinterprets and transforms Gabriel García Márquez’s Cien años de soledad (1967). The research is divided into two main parts. The first section offers a positive evaluation of how the emotional and aesthetic dimensions of the novel are ‘reborn’ through cinematic rhythm and mise-en-scène. It focuses particularly on the creative strategies employed by the Netflix production team and the director in translating the atmosphere of magical realism and the novel’s cyclical sense of time into contemporary visual language—through the use of props, symbols, spatial composition, and lighting design. The second section moves beyond these aesthetic achievements to analyze how Netflix’s tagging system and algorithmic visuality guide the reception and interpretation of the narrative. By examining teasers and trailers, it traces the mechanisms through which the novel’s multilayered elements are re-coded into simplified emotional categories such as “political series,” “nostalgia,” or “irresistible attraction.” Through this analysis, the study acknowledges the aesthetic accomplishments of audiovisual remediation while simultaneously revealing how, in the digital platform era, the regional and cultural specificity of Latin American literature becomes commodified and re-appropriated within global streaming logics.
