Abstract
The rise of Netflix original Korean dramas is not the product of an unmediated creative landscape. Rather, their emergence reflects a confluence of platform-specific logics and industrial conditions shaped by Netflix’s global expansion strategy. Through localization and diversity initiatives, Netflix has established both an aesthetic framework and a production infrastructure that discipline Korean creators to operate within a market-oriented regime of value. This study examines how Netflix’s strategic imperatives are inscribed in Korean original dramas within the global OTT visual economy. The platform’s localization strategy functions to subsume domestic creators into its production network, while its diversity strategy—though ostensively inclusive of all tastes and identities—operates as a mechanism that drives the production of highly marketable forms and contents, particularly thriller subgenres characterized by “strong” stories and provocative expressions. Themes such as individuals pushed to the brink, the collapse of social safety nets, the absence of state governance, and the contradictions and violence of neoliberal competition have become defining motifs of Korean Netflix originals. A sustained preoccupation with the darker side of human existnece, the construction of sadistic worldviews, and the overt depiction of ethical and physical violence together constitute their dominant narrative and stylistic grammar. The continued conversion of catastrophic structures and extreme human conditions into a powerful “common currency” within the global market calls for critical scrutiny. This study critically examines this phenomenon and proposes the concept of “a habitus of the extreme” to articulate its industrial and aesthetic dynamics.
