Abstract
We live in an era where play culture is more developed than ever. Today, play is no longer an occasional bonus but has become an essential part of life. This paper aims to provide a pastoral theological perspective of play to help Christians understand it in this golden day of play, where play has become a daily routine rather than a luxury. The research questions that develop this paper are as follows: Are modern people living in the golden days of play playing well enough? and Are Christians living today being properly fed with theological language for play? To answer these questions, this paper first examines the sphere of play in our lives, the process of developing the ego's ability to enjoy play, and the influence of the environment on this process through the play theory of British psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott. Based on this discussion, an attempt was made to critically reflect on the play enjoyed by contemporary people living in an era where play culture has developed to the extent that it is called the golden age of play. Chapter III discusses the possibility of play and faith joining through the perspective of 'paradox and dynamics.' Play and faith may seem paradoxical, but when combined, they can facilitate dynamic creativity. Chapter IV introduces a pastoral theological perspective called 'linking play,' drawing on Donald Winnicott's theory and Jurgen Moltmann's theology of play. This concept offers believerswho live between the realities of the world and the vision of the kingdom of Goda way to navigate both worlds playfully, rather than being pressured to choose between them. Chapter V then explores a vision of pastoral theology called 'the future of a creative illusion' inspired by Paul Pruyser's reinterpretation of Freud's critique of religion. In this view, faith becomes a form of creative illusion that will enable believers to dream of the kingdom of God while remaining grounded in the reality of life. It is a faith that invites us into a creative and engaging way of living.
