Abstract
This qualitative case study explores how seminary students experience intersubjective care through narrative therapy-based counselling. In contemporary churches, the ideal pastor is a skilled preacher, filled with the Holy Spirit, empathetic to the congregation, communicative, and relationally mature. Thus, as future pastors, theology graduate students must examine their self-perceptions, unresolved wounds, and personal challenges before entering full-time ministry. This inner work, however, cannot be done in isolation; it requires intersubjective care fostered through collaborative relationships. The study aimed to examine how seminary students experience such care in counselling sessions grounded in narrative therapy, where the client's and counsellor's right-brain interactions enable identity reconstruction and the discovery of new meaning. Five theology students (four men, one woman) participated in five one-hour weekly counselling sessions. Data were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), which helped uncover the participants' lived experiences and perceptions. The analysis yielded two main themes'caring relationships' and 'identity and life goals'and seven sub-themes: 'relationship with counsellor', 'relationship with God', 'relationship with self', 'relationship with others', 'discovery of resources and values', 'rediscovery of calling', and 're-authoring the life narrative'. Through neuro-narrative-based counselling, students engaged in intersubjective care, inviting God into their personal narratives and relationships. The process of re-authoring identity allowed them to reflect deeply on their vision and values as future church leaders.
