초등 영어 교과서 문화 내용 분석 연구: 초등 5, 6학년을 중심으로

본 연구의 목적은 초등학교 영어 교과서가 문화교육의 중요성을 강조하고 있는 2015 영어과 교육과정의 성격과 목표를 반영하여 적절하게 개발되었는지를 고찰해 보기 위함이었다. 이를 위해 2019년부터 학교 현장에서 교재로 사용되고 있는 초등 5, 6학년 5종 영어 교과서에서 제시된 문화 내용의 문화 유형, 문화 내용의 국가적 배경, 그리고 문화 교수·학습 방법을 고찰해 보았다. 각 교과서 문화학습란의 문화 내용이 어떤 문화 유형으로 구성되어 있는지 확인하기 위하여 Bierstedt(1970)가 분류한 문화 유형(물질문화, 행동문화, 정신문화)을 상위범주로 정하여 분석이 이루어졌다. 하위범주의 경우, Chastain(1976)과 Pesola(1991)의 연구 틀을 참고하여 분석이 이루어졌다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 문화 내용을 유형 측면에서는 ‘물질문화’와 ‘행동문화’의 비율이 모두 높게 나타났고, ‘정신문화’의 비율은 상대적으로 낮았다. 둘째, 문화 내용의 국가적 배경 측면에서는 영어권 국가 중 미국의 비중이 지나치게 높았고, 비영어권 국가 중 중남미, 아프리카, 극지방의 비율은 지극히 낮아 교과서 내 지역별 큰 편차를 보여주었다. 셋째, 문화 내용의 문화 교수·학습 방법 측면에서는 대부분의 교과서에 획일적인 교수·학습 방법이 적용되어 활동의 다양성이 부족한 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 네 가지 구체적인 제언이 이루어졌다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine whether the current 5th and 6th grade elementary school English textbooks are suitable for learning the cultural diversity emphasized in the 2015 revised English curriculum. With this aim, textbooks from four different publishing companies were analyzed in terms of cultural types, national background, cultural teaching and learning methods. The results of this study are as follows: first, as a result of the analysis of the cultural content by type, 'material culture' and 'behavior culture' were high and both had the same rate of 42%, and the rate of 'mental culture' was 16%. Although there is a difference in the ratio of textbooks by type, the lowest ratio of 'mental culture' was common for all textbooks analyzed in this study. Second, as a result of analyzing cultural content according to national background, non-English speaking countries showed the highest rate at 62%, and English-speaking countries were the second highest at 30%. Korea accounted for 7% and universal culture 1%. Finally, as a result of analyzing the cultural content by cultural teaching and learning methods, three teaching and learning methods were used in most textbooks: 'presentation and explanation of short information', 'presentation of pictures and pictures', and 'viewing of videos'. Based on the results, several applications and suggestions were discussed.
