Abstract

This study evaluates the cultural contents in revised English textbooks, on the basis of national curriculum announced in 2008. English textbooks used by grade 6 students and have been used since 2011 are specifically analysed. The examination of these textbooks is expected to suggest the direction of cultural education for improvement in communication ability. The questions of the study for the analysis are as follows: it is analyzed that how much the 6th grade's elementary school English textbooks are reflected on the cultural topics, the cultural types and different countries' culture, and the cultural contents. The results of the study are as follows: First, the 19 topics suggested in the revised national curriculum have not been fully distributed in a balanced way. The 9th topic rate is the highest of the 19 ones. The 9th topic is helpful for the understanding of the cultural differences of different countries compared with Korean culture, and the way of verbal or non-verbal communication. Second, `perspectives' is the most frequent one of all 6 kinds of textbooks. `products' is presented very often. It is necessary to improve the ratio of `communities' and `persons'. Third, every culture section included in 6 kinds of textbooks introduces cultural contents by pictures and explanations. Also, each section has CD-ROM which shows the videos about the cultural contents. Two of the textbooks provide websites with further information on diverse cultures. Based on the results of the study, suggestions for development of the elementary English textbooks were provided.
