본 연구의 목적은 2009 개정 영어과 교육과정에 따른 초등학교 영어 교과서의 문화 내용을 분석하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 4개 학년 모두 검정을 통과한 초등학교 3∼6학년 영어 교과서 4종을 대상으로 문화 섹션과 대화문, 읽기 지문에 나타난 문화 관련 내용을 조사하여 그내용을 비교·분석하였다. 연구의 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 문화의 유형은 행동문화, 물질문화, 정신문화의 순으로 자주 다루어지는 것으로 나타났다. 정신문화는 빈도가 매우낮아 고학년에서 정신문화를 좀 더 많이 소개할 수 있는 방안에 대한 연구가 필요할 것으로보인다. 둘째, 문화 내용의 학년 간 계열성을 분석한 결과 공통 문화 소재가 학년이 올라갈수록 내용이 심화되는 경향을 보였다. 이러한 제시 방식은 특정 문화 소재를 보다 깊이 있게배울 수 있게 할 뿐만 아니라 학년 간 연계된 문화 수업을 가능하게 하여 학습 효과를 높일수 있어 바람직하다. 셋째, 단원의 문화 섹션과 대화문, 읽기 지문의 언어 내용을 분석하여 둘 간의 연계성을 알아본 결과 평균 79.1%의 연계 학습 가능 비율을 보였다. 넷째, 교과서에나타난 지역적 배경을 분석한 결과, 빈번하게 나타난 배경은 영어권 국가, 한국, 유럽, 아시아 순이었다. 가장 자주 등장한 인종은 한국인이었으며 백인이 흑인, 동양인에 비해 두 배이상 높은 빈도로 등장하였다. 균형 잡힌 문화 인식을 심어주기 위해서는 지역적 배경과 인종의 선정에 있어서도 보다 세심한 주의를 기울일 필요가 있을 것이다. 다섯째, 문화 섹션의문화 내용 제시 방법에 있어서는 CD자료 동영상과 사진이 설명과 함께 제시되는 방식이 가장 많이 활용되어 바람직한 방향이라 볼 수 있었다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the cultural content of elementary school English textbooks based on the 2009 Revised National Curriculum. For this purpose, the culture sections, dialogues and reading texts of 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade English textbooks were analyzed in terms of five criteria: the types of cultural content, the progression in cultural content from 3rd to 6th grade, the connection between linguistic and cultural content, regional background and the races of the main characters, and the ways of presenting cultural content. The results of the study were as follows. First, behavioral culture was found to be the most frequent in the textbooks whereas the frequency of spiritual culture was low. Second, the four textbooks included a spiral progression in cultural content, which enabled students to learn particular cultural content in detail throughout the grades. Third, the connection between culture sections and language content in the dialogues and reading texts averaged 79.1%. Fourth, English, Korean and European cultures were presented more often than Asian, African and Latin American cultures. Lastly, the use of CD clips and pictures with brief explanations were the most common ways of presenting cultural content. Based on the findings of the study, a few suggestions were made for effective culture education.
