Abstract

The purpose of this article is to describe the change in status experienced by Chinese as an heritage language in the Chinese language community in Singapore from a socio-linguistic perspective. Various Chinese languages, including Mandarin, other Sinitic languages, and Singdarin, are spoken in Singapore's Chinese community. The multilingualism of Singapore, especially the Chinese community in Singapore, is related to the hybrid identity of the world's citizens, Singaporeans, and overseas Chinese, and each language is an identity marker that represents a multi-layered identity hierarchy. As "Census of Population 2020" shows, the recent dominance of English and contraction of Chinese in Singapore is clear. In Singapore, Chinese, the language of immigrants, is no longer the dominant language, and most children in the Chinese community speak English fluently as they grow up with English, the dominant language, but only a few speak Chinese fluently. In Singapore, Chinese is becoming more and more of a heritage language.
