초록
This article examines the ways in which Chinul engages and reconfigures previous Chan materials, especially Dahui’s Records. Chinul was the first Korean Chan master influenced by Dahui’s works and the first to endorse Dahui’s kanhua practice. Since Chinul’s third and final awakening occurred while reading Dahui’s Record, Dahui’s Chan teaching was indispensable for Chinul. Yet Chinul critiques Dahui’s sudden subitism and espouses moderate subitism, contending that method is suitable only for practitioners with high faculties. Dahui’s works, however, show that his sudden subitism successfully worked for lay practitioners with low faculties and also that Dahui was conscious of potential pitfalls of radical subitism. This study demonstrates that Chinul made the best use of tension between historicism and internal dynamism, a strategy that has crucial historical and hermeneutical implications in the Chan Buddhist studies.
