Abstract

This study aimed to explore early childhood teachers’ perceptions of supporting young children’s social-emotional competence, as well as their needs for teacher training on this topic. Data were collected through group interviews with eight early childhood teachers of 3-to 5-year-old children working at early childhood education institutions located in Seoul and Gyeonggi, and were subsequently analyzed. The findings were as follows: First, early childhood teachers’ perceptions of supporting young children’s social-emotional competence were categorized into three main themes: providing educational experiences, a limited understanding of the concept, and a lack of comprehension regarding practical approaches. Second, early childhood teachers expressed a need for teacher trainings that focus on: education that leads to changes in values and perspectives, content that is practical and applicable in the field, education that fosters sharing, participation, and communication, and education that serves as a source of motivation and inspiration. The findings suggest that while early childhood teachers recognize the importance of supporting young children's social-emotional competence, they encounter difficulties in both thetheoretical and practical aspects of implementationThis highlights the need for teacher training programs that strengthen both theoretical knowledge and practical application. Additionally, the study suggests that teacher education programs for supporting young children's social-emotional competence should focus on enhancing teaching competence, integrating practical content, using case-based discussions as a teaching-learning method, and operating within small teacher groups.
