Abstract
This study explores early childhood social-emotional competencies as perceived by early childhood teachers using concept mapping. Fourteen teachers with extensive experience teaching 3- to 5-year-olds participated. Through semi-structured interviews, 45 final statements were derived and subjected to similarity sorting and importance-performance ratings. Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) and hierarchical cluster analysis established a two-dimensional map (Self-Other / Awareness & Attitude– Behavior & Skill) comprising seven clusters. According to the analysis results, early childhood social-emotional competencies consist of: ‘understanding and expressing the self positively’, ‘managing mind and behavior’, ‘setting goals, challenging, and achieving’, ‘understanding others' perspectives’, ‘building positive peer relationships through cooperation’, ‘conflict resolution through dialogue and negotiation’, and ‘consideration and sharing for living together’. According to the importance-performance results, ‘understanding and expressing the self positively’ scored the highest in both categories. However, the largest gap appeared in ‘managing mind and behavior’. This area had high importance ratings, but it`s performance was low. Consequently, the study suggests four implications: 1) positive self-understanding acts as the foundation of early childhood social-emotional competencies; 2) self-regulation is critical but difficult to master; 3) relationship building is skilled, but conflict resolution is difficult to execute; and 4) responsibility awareness should be based on the relational context.
