Abstract

Among the complex and philosophical works of the Strugatsky brothers, which profoundly influenced Soviet intellectuals, The Inhabited Island marks a critical turning point by overtly critiquing totalitarian society. In a reality where communist ideals are confined to mere slogans, the novel encapsulates concerns permeating the brothers’ oeuvre. The Inhabited Island drew renewed attention when director Fyodor Bondarchuk adapted it into a two-part film in 2008. However, the film regrettably failed to adequately portray the core elements of the original work, namely protagonist Maxim Kammerer’s moral conflict and sense of responsibility, and the issue of Homo sacer stemming from the regime’s biopolitics. This paper analyzes the adaptation of the Strugatsky brothers’ work, focusing on Maxim Kammerer’s inner conflict, moral dilemma, conscience, and responsibility. Unlike a closed narrative with a definitive political stance, the novel’s open ending invites multiple interpretations and actively engages readers’ imaginations, illuminating the cultural implications and ongoing relevance of the Strugatsky brothers’ literature. The film, however, adheres to the original plot while simplifying the complex text, transforming it into a closed narrative with a fixed meaning. This transformation can be interpreted as a compromise that prioritizes entertainment over the original work’s complex ideas, driven by a desire for a standardized Western science fiction aesthetic and commercial success.
