Abstract

This study reexamines the trajectory of the Qianjia Uprising (1795–1797) by analyzing the statements (供述) of its principal leaders and participants preserved in Archival Documents on the Miao Uprisings (苗民起義檔案史料). While previous research has largely centered on the Qing state’s governance and suppression policies, this paper seeks to reconstruct the events from within Miao society by foregrounding the testimonies of the historical actors themselves. Particular attention is paid to the uprising led by Shi Manyi (石滿宜) in Goubozhai (勾補寨) during the 52nd year of the Qianlong reign (1787), which served as a precursor to the larger Qianjia Uprising. The Goubozhai revolt already exhibited key features later seen in 1795—alliances among local chieftains, mobilization through religious belief, and cooperation among village organizations—revealing the accumulation of social tensions that ultimately culminated in full-scale rebellion. Although the confessions were recorded under the supervision of Qing officials, they contain dense information on personal relationships, geographical movements, religious practices, and village power structures within Miao society. As such, these documents are not mere “records of rebellion,” but vivid first-hand accounts left by the Miao themselves, allowing us to reconstruct the internal organization and lived realities of local society. In particular, the testimonies reveal the operation of Miao King (苗王) worship and the phenomenon of fadian (spirit possession), which functioned as ideological and organizational principles of resistance. Ultimately, the Archives of the Miao Uprisings constitute a living body of historical evidence that exposes the internal dynamics and social structures of Miao society inaccessible through official Qing records. By centering on the voices of the participants, this study expands the scope of Qing frontier scholarship—shifting from a history of “rebellion” to a history of people and society as narrated by the Miao themselves.
