Abstract

This study examines the relationship between animal sacrifice and zoomorphic pottery in the mortuary rituals of Silla and Gaya, and aims to clarify the symbolic substitution structure formed between representation and actual beings. It first traces the development of zoomorphic pottery in the southern Korean Peninsula from the Proto-Three Kingdoms to the Three Kingdoms period, focusing on the transition from bird-shaped pottery to horse- shaped pottery. It then analyzes the intersections between animal sacrifice and zoomorphic pottery through the cases of birds and horses. In the case of birds, representations such as bird-shaped pottery first became estab- lished within mortuary ritual, and later, in the stage of high-mounded tombs, expanded into the large-scale deposition and sacrifice of actual birds. In contrast, in the case of horses, ac- tual horse sacrifice was first incorporated into mortuary ritual, and later the sacrifice of the living animal came to be replaced by material representations, as seen in the horse-shaped clay figurines and horse-rider-shaped pottery from Geumnyeongchong Tomb. This substitution was not a unidirectional process in which actual beings were simply transformed into representations, or representations into actual beings. Rather, it was a rela- tionship in which the ritual functions assigned to animals were performed through different objects and material media according to social and economic conditions as well as ritual contexts. Horses, in particular, were valuable property and markers of status that required considerable costs for breeding and management; therefore, the burden of sacrificing actual horses made it possible to transfer their ritual meaning into material representations. In this sense, zoomorphic pottery was not merely an imitation or decorative object, but a ritual medium that embodied the meaning of animal sacrifice in a more adjustable and repeatable form. Furthermore, the shift in symbolic emphasis from birds to horses was not simply an iconographic change. It was closely related to a transformation in the character of ancient society: from a society grounded in agricultural fertility and the order of nature to one increasingly defined by a hierarchical political order represented by horses, horse gear, and mounted warriors. Ultimately, the development and substitution of animal sym- bols serve as an indicator of the values and forms of power that Silla and Gaya societies sought to represent through mortuary ritual.
