Abstract

Purpose: This study examines the effects of personal characteristics of school-aged students with developmental disabilities on their likelihood and motivation for independent living, and further investigates the mediating role of challenging behavior reduction in this relationship. Methods: Using data from 482 school-aged students with developmental disabilities obtained from the “2023 Survey on the Work and Life of People with Developmental Disabilities,” logistic and multiple regression analyses were conducted to assess the impacts of things. Results: Activities of Daily Living and cognitive ability positively predicted both independence possibility and motivation, while challenging behavior reduction predicted only the possibility. Implications: Strengthening functional competence is essential, and dual-support is needed—teaching skills while also promoting self-determination and intrinsic motivation.
