Abstract
Purpose: This study aimed to identify the mediating effect of challenging behaviour on the relationship between communication skills and school adjustment of middle and high school students with developmental disabilities, and to find out whether their educational environment(special school/special class) moderates the mediating effect between communication skills, challenging behaviour, and school adjustment, and to explore school adjustment support measures that take into account the characteristics and educational environment of people with developmental disabilities. Method: Process macro was used to estimate the direct effects of challenging behaviour on school adjustment and the indirect effects of communication skills on the relationship between communication skills and school adjustment. We also estimated the moderating effect of educational environment(special school/special class) on the relationship between communication skills, challenging behaviour and school adjustment. Results: Challenging behaviour partially mediated the relationship between communication skills and school adjustment among secondary school students with developmental disabilities, and educational setting(special school/special class) moderated the relationship between communication skills, challenging behaviour, and school adjustment. Conclusion: These findings suggest that functional assessments that identify the communicative intent of challenging behaviour should be promoted for school adjustment. In particular, the findings suggest the need for intervention of challenging behaviour and school adjustment support for students in special classes.
