Abstract
Plato’s Sophist 243d-249d takes many contentions about ‘Being’ into account critically. There have been many disputes among scholars around this text, but I pay special attention to the one between Brown and Politis in this paper. What is it that is the final achievement by the Eleatic Stranger, a main speak of the dialogue, in these passages? As Brown affirms, is it true that the materialists receive forms in their ontology and the formalists accept bodies, so that both groups perfectly reconcile and are integrated in an ‘all-inclusive ontology’? Or, as Politis argues, do some fundamental disagreements between them have been resolved in spite of the Stranger’s efforts, and the integration remains imperfect? This paper is an attempt to intervene in the dispute between Brown and Politis and defend the Stranger attaining the all-inclusive ontology from an viewpoint different from Brown’s. I take the text 249d3-4 for a ‘philosophical declaration’ resulting in integration between the opposing positions. The ‘intellect’ both is one and the same thing, and has two aspects of being and becoming. Using this intellect, the Stranger really integrate the view of the formalists that beings are at rest and the one of the materialists that everything is in motion. A philosopher, who most respects intellect, is able to neglect neither motion nor rest. The all-inclusive ontology and philosophical declaration held by the Stranger is: ‘being and everything consists of whatever is in motion and at rest.’
