Abstract

Since its first release in 1966, Late Autumn has been regarded as a significant work in the development of modern Korean cinema. It has since been remade several times, including by a Japanese director, and screened in Japan, reflecting its cross-cultural influence. This study focuses on the 2010 remake directed by Kim Tae-yong and conducts a systematic analysis of metaphorical phenomena in the film based on the Conceptual Metaphor Theory proposed by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson. Specifically, it examines three types of metaphors—structural metaphors, orientational metaphors, and ontological metaphors—from the perspectives of both verbal and non-verbal metaphor. Verbal metaphors are analyzed through the characters' dialogues, which reveal shifts in interpersonal relationships and emotional dynamics. Non-verbal metaphors are explored through recurring visual imagery such as watches, mobile phones, and changes in the protagonist’s clothing, effectively reflecting the characters’ internal states and the cultural and social tensions they face. Through this analysis, the study reveals that metaphor not only enhances the narrative tension and artistic expressiveness of the film but also provides an effective pathway to understanding the emotional and value conflicts depicted within a cross-cultural context. Furthermore, the research demonstrates that Conceptual Metaphor Theory is applicable beyond linguistic analysis and can be extended to audiovisual media, particularly film as an art form. This approach offers new perspectives and expanded possibilities for the study of cinematic language and may serve as a viable methodology for analyzing films across diverse cultural settings in the future.
