槪念的 隱喩의 相對性 －19~20世紀初 古小說을 중심으로－

이 硏究의 目的은 19세기초~20세기초에 걸쳐 간행된 古小說 資料를 대상으로 認知言語學의 槪念的 隱喩가 한국어에 어떤 방식으로 具顯되는지를 분석하는 것이다. 그 결과 고소설 자료에서는 槪念的 隱喩가 現代語와는 다른 양상을 보인다. ‘시간’을 事物化하여 槪念化하는 것은 普遍的이지만 根源領域과 目標領域 모두 풍부하게 構造化된 구조로 寫像되는 構造的 隱喩의 경우에는 時代的․文化的 영향을 받게 된다. 예컨대 [시간은 자원과 돈이다]와 같이 잘 알려진 개념적 은유도 실제로는 보편적이라기보다는 言語 特定的임을 밝혔다. 또한 [감정은 容器이다]라는 은유도 발견하기 어려웠다. 추상적 개념 영역을 隱喩가 아닌 非隱喩 통해 표현하는 예가 많은데 이에 대한 개념적 은유 이론 측의 說明이 필요하다. 이를 통해 旣存의 槪念的 隱喩에서 제시되는 몇 가지 隱喩 命題들은 西歐的 思惟의 反映이자 西歐 言語體系의 反映임을 주장하였다.
Abstract
This study is to show how conceptual metaphor in cognitive linguistics is used in Korean old novels of early 19~20C. The result of this study shows that the way conceptual metaphor was used is dif- ferent from that of modern data. For example, a well-known metaphor, [TIME IS A RESOURCE AND MONEY], is language-specific rather than universal. Another metaphor, [EMOTION IS A VEHICLE] is also hard to find in data from old novels. Besides, it was easy to find cases that expressions of abstract conceptual domain were expressed through not metaphor but through non-metaphoric expressions, and an explanation based on conceptual metaphor theory is needed. These cases support that expressions of conceptual metaphor reflect western thought and language system. I agree that the metaphor is so much central role for the conceptualization of the world in principle. But at the same time I have a doubt that the metaphor is a unique method for the conceptualization of the world.
