예언의 은사는 정경 분별을 마친 후에는 중단되었다고 슈라이너는 주장한다. 그러나 신약 정경은 예언을 통하여 분별되지 않았고, 사도성을 통하여 분별되었다. 슈라이너는 계시가 성경과 동등한 권위를 가진 것이므로 성경 기록이 완성된 후에는 계시의은사인 예언(과 방언)도 종결되었다고 한다. 그러나 신약 시대의예언은 성경 기록과 동등한 권위를 갖지 않기에, 신약 성경 중에사도성과 무관하게 예언(이나 방언)이 기록되어 채택된 책은 없었다. 슈라이너는 또한 기적적 은사는 성경을 확증하는 역할을다한 후에는 중단되었다고 한다. 그러나 성경 기록이 완성된 후에도 성경이 하나님 말씀임을 확증을 위해 기적이 발생할 수 있을 것이다. 데릭슨은 사도들의 경우에도 점점 치유의 은사를 잃어가는 현상이 성경 기록에서 발견된다고 주장한다. 그러나 그의주장은 성경 본문에서 입증되지 않으며, 오히려 사도 시대 이후 에도 은사가 지속되었음이 교부들의 글에서도 확인된다. 은사중지론자들은 은사가 교회 설립을 위한 것이므로 교회 설립 이후에는 불필요하여 중단되었다고 주장한다. 그러나 성경은은사가 단지 교회 설립만이 아니라, 설립된 교회에 덕을 세우기위한 것이라고 한다(고전 14:12). 따라서 은사는 교회가 설립된후에도 여전히 필요하다고 볼 수 있다. 사도 바울은 더욱 큰 은사, 특히 예언의 은사를 사모하라고 권한다(고전 14:1, 31, 39). 이러한 권면은 은사의 중지가 아니라 지속을 전제한다. 비록 고린도전서 13:10은 온전한 것이 올 때에는 예언도 방언도 그친다고 하지만, ‘온전한 것이 올 때’는 주께서 우리를 아시는 것처럼 우리도온전하게 (주를) 알게 되는 때로서 아직 오지 않은 시점을 가리킨다(고전 13:12). 바울은 은사 중지를 주장하지 않았고 오히려 은사가 모두에게 주어질 수 있다고 하며(고전 14:31), 다만 은사를 독점하지 못하도록 한다(고전 14:30, 37). 바울은 누구에게나 주어질수 있는 보편적 은사가 교회에 덕을 세우며 질서 있게 사용되도록권면함을 통하여 은사 독점의 폐해를 막는 길을 제시한다.
Abstract
T. Schreiner maintains that prophecy was needed for recognition of the canonical writings and thus it stopped after accomplishing its work. The recognition of New Testament (= NT) canon, however, was not achieved by prophecy but through apostolicity. According to his argument, prophecy (for revelation) stopped, since revelation was not needed after the completion of the Scriptures which have equal authority with revelation. The prophecy in the NT period, however, does not have such authority. As a result the NT canon does not include any writing of prophecy regardless of apostolicity. Schreiner argued that the spiritual gifts, which aimed to confirm revelation, stopped after fulfilling their work by completion of the NT canon. Even after its completion, however, its confirmation is still necessary when its contents are proclaimed. Hence God’s miraculous works may continue for its confirmation. G. W. Derickson argued that the apostles were already losing the gift of healing. Continuation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, however, is attested even in the works of the Church Fathers. The cessationists claim that the spiritual gifts stopped after accomplishing the work of building the Church. The Bible, however, states that the gifts also intended to reprove and console the believers (1 Cor 14:3, 23-24, 31). Thus their function would not stop as long as the Church exists. Cessationsists appeal to 1 Corinthians 13:10 which states prophecy and tongue will stop when ‘the perfects’ will come. When ‘the perfects’ will come, however, we will know (the Lord) fully as He fully knows us (1 Cor 13:12). Since such a period has not arrived yet, one may not suppose the cessation of such gifts.
