Abstract

In the second half of the 20th century, the movement of the Holy Spirit or the charismatic movement has expanded to many Protestant churches, the Catholic church and even to Eastern Orthodoxy over the full-Gospel churches. It is now called 'the fourth flow' in church history. These movements have brought great effects on the birth and growth of the church as well as mission of the church. While these movements were very active in 1960-1970, the growth of Korean churches were remarkable enough to be called the miracle in the history of the church mission. The major questions at issue in the gifts of the Holy Spirit are: a) the sorts of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, b) whether the gifts of the Holy Spirit withdrew from the end of the apostolic era or not, c) is there superiority or inferiority among the gifts of the Holy Spirit?, d) do the gifts of the Holy Spirit endow only upon specific person?, e) the gifts of the Holy Spirit will pass away or never fade out, f) are the gifts of the Holy Spirit a token of spiritual growth, g) the relations between grace, gift, fruit, talent, and stewardship (or calling). We must understand the gifts in terms of 1) trinitarian perspective, 2) three-fold offices of Jesus Christ, and 3) the doctrine of the church. Nowadays, the gifts of the Holy Spirit are endowing all believers just like on the day of Pentecost. The development and use of the gifts of the Holy Spirit are very important for ministry. Therefore the biblical understanding and use of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is needed for ministry today. When the church follows the ministry of the Holy Spirit, growth and revival will be given to church.
