Abstract
This article traces the history of the Russian peasant commune, before, during and after the revolutions of 1905 and 1917. All the Marxist factions in Russia were blinded to its importance, both by their fixation of the model of the French Revolution and by Second International Marxism. They expected, following the French model, that the peasants would seek individual ownership of land. Lenin’s first important book, The Development of Capitalism in Russia (1899), mentions the commune only a few times as a “Tsarist legal relic”. After 1905, the Tsarist regime itself actually understood the importance of the commune better than the Marxists, realized it was the backbone of peasant resistance in the countryside, and took measures encouraging peasants to leave it for private ownership of land. After the 1917 revolution, 98% of Russian territory was occupied by communes, until they were destroyed by Stalin’s “collectivization” at the end of the 1920’s.
