Abstract

What was the source of dynamics which Russian workers showed in the revolutions of the early twentieth century? In the past, Soviet scholars roughly identified the formation of modern proletariat with the growth of revolutionary consciousness. Most Western scholars, on the contrary, focused on the rebellion tradition of the peasantry which was conveyed to the urban workers. The third perspective is based on the fact that Russian workers were differentiated into various groups. Russia experienced a rapid industrialization from 1880s on, mostly centered on heavy industry. However, she also had a consumer industry developed for two centuries. In effect, there were much more handicraft workers than factory workers. However, it was factory workers who played a leading role in labor or revolutionary movement. Again, they were composed of various groups according to the skill level. And this was a decisive factor in their differentiation, relation to the home village and level of consciousness. But they had many experiences in common, including working day, working environment, various exploitations, social status and so on. In short, their working conditions were poorest among European industries. And they were reproduced in daily life after work. By these were offset advantages enjoyed by skilled workers. At any rate, such a situation seems to be not sufficient for an explanation of Russian workers’ revolutionary dynamics. The decisive factor may be that Russina workers had no outlet to solve or soothe their discontent in comparison to their Western colleagues. In this, there is a need to delve into the relation between labor and state.
