본고는 국어 造語論에서 사용되어 온 ‘어근’ 또는 ‘어기’ 등의 용어가 의미하는 바를 명확히 하고 그 대상을 한정하고자 하였다. ‘어기’를 “接辭의 對”가 된다거나 “접사가 부착될 수 있는 형식”으로 정의했을 때의 불명료성을 보완하기 위해 “형태론적 조작이 적용되는 대상”으로 정의하여 파생과 복합이 함께 적용되는 대상임을 명확히 하였다. ‘어근’은 굴절어미가 직접 결합할 수 없는 의존형식으로 한정하되 단일형태소뿐만 아니라 ‘簡便’과 같은 복합형식도 포함시켜 다루는 것이 이점이 많음을 확인하였다. 또한 어근은 단어를 형성하는 것이 주 기능이지만 통사적 구성에도 참여할 수 있어 통사 단위가 될 수 있음을 살펴보았다. 마지막으로 單語가 아닌 語根을 형성하는 接辭의 예로 한자어 접미사 ‘-視-, -然-’과 외래어 접미사 ‘-틱(tic)-’을 들었다. 이들은 ‘[정치 분야의 대가]然하다’ 등과 같이 어기 명사가 확장되면서 再構造化가 일어나는 것으로 보았다.
Abstract
This paper examined the various concepts of root, stem, base all over again, and tried to make clear their strengths and weaknesses. So far the concept of base has been defined as the opposite of affixes, but this definition have the disadvantage of excluding the constituents of compound words from roots. In this respect we proposed that the concept of base should be modified as the object to which the morphological operations such as compounding and derivation applies. And we insisted that the concept of roots should include compound forms such as ‘sin-seon(新鮮)’ as well as simple morphemes. The principal function of roots is to form words, but roots can function as a syntactic unit. The roots which can take part in the syntactic constructions are usually Sino-Korean roots. This kind of Sino-Korean has compound roots such as ‘guk-je(國際)’, ‘dan-sun(單純)’, ‘gan-i(簡易)’ as well as simple roots such as ‘guk(國)’, ‘yong(用)’. Finally, we elucidated that there are root-forming suffixes such as Sino-Korean ‘si(視)’, ‘yeon(然)’ and loanword suffix ‘tik(-tic)’. When their preceding bases expand into NP, the total structure tend to be attended with the process of syntactic restructuring like ‘[정치 분야의 대가]然하다’.
