구문 형태론에 기반한 형태론 용어들의 정의

본고는 학교 문법에서 통용되고 있는 형태론 관련 용어들이 어떤 문제점과 모순을 발생시키는지 비판적으로 살펴보고, 구문 형태론의 관점에서 형태론 관련 용어을 보다 타당하게 정의하는 방안을 제시하였다. 학교 문법은 학문 문법의 성격과 규범 문법의 성격을 동시에 가지는데, 현재 학교 문법에서 통용되는 형태론 관련 용어들의 정의는 고전적인 형태론이 반영된 규범주의에 기울어 있어, 언어의 실제에 대한 탐구 활동 및 새로운 언어학 모형의 설명력을 수용하지 못하고 있다. 형태론 관련 용어들에 대한 구조주의 관점의 정의들은 기계 은유의 영향으로 단어의 형성 과정이 선조적이며 절차적일 것이라 단정하지만 구문 형태론에서는 단어와 구문이 기계적인 순서가 아닌 언어 사용의 경험을 통해 발생한 도식에 의해 생성될 수 있다고 제안한다. 이 연구에서는 구문 형태론의 관점에서 형태론의 다양한 용어들, 즉 형태소와 단어, 실질 형태소와 형식 형태소, 어근과 접사와 같은 용어들을 새롭게 정의해 보고, 그 새로운 정의가 한국어 사용의 실제에 대한 설명적 타당성을 개선해 주고 효율적인 탐구 활동도 촉진할 수 있다는 것을 논의하였다.
Abstract
This paper critically examines how the current definitions of morphological terms used in school grammar are confronted with major inconsistencies and suggests the more adequate definitions of morphological terms from the perspective of construction morphology. Although school grammar is supposed to have the nature of academic grammar and prescriptive grammar, the current definitions of morphological terms in school grammar are hinging on prescriptivism reflecting classical morphology, so it could not accomodate to the exploratory learning activities of class nor the explanatory adequacies of new linguistic models like cognitive linguistics. Under the influence of machine metaphors, Structuralist definitions of morphological terms assume that the formation of words will be in linear and procedural ways, but Construction Morphology suggests that words and phrases can be generated by a schema through the experience of language use rather than mechanical order. This study provides with alternative definition of various terms of morphology, such as morpheme and word, so-called full and empty morpheme, root and suffix and argues that the construction based definition can improve the explanatory adequacy of authentic Korean usage and promote efficient exploratory activities in the context of grammar teaching.
