Abstract
This study examines the six different translations of the lines in Act 3, Scene 2 of Shakespeare’s Hamlet and corrects errors. The study also verifies how the author metaphorically reveals, in the lines, the instrumental characteristics of the cittern, an advanced string instrument that appeared in 16th century England, and examines Hamlet’s individuation desire within them. The cittern, a plucked string instrument with a fretboard, which had steel strings instead of gut strings, first appeared in the history of English instruments between the 16th and early 17th centuries, the period in which Shakespeare lived. According to the individuation theory taken from Jungian archetypes, humans have a ceaseless desire toward individuation. Shakespeare reveals Hamlet’s desire to achieve rational individuation by supplementing his emotional imperfection through the metaphor of the cittern in his lines in act 3, scene 2.
