초록

This essay explores Shakespeare’s technical metaphors focusing on Hamlet. The first step begins with exploring metaphors in relation to four technologies like clocks, globes, compasses, and mirrors which were popular in Shakespeare’s contemporary life. After that, technical metaphors are closely analyzed in association with the characters of the play to figure out what dramatic meanings the metaphors create contextually. Hamlet, the hero of the play, is mainly discussed in the analysis because he produces multiple significances of technical metaphors in the play. In addition to the four technologies, gunpowder technologies are also surveyed because they are effective instruments to show the difference between characters such as Hamlet and Claudius. In conclusion, this essay argues that technical metaphors used in Hamlet not only reflect the aspect of technological contrivances in Shakespeare’s era but also create various dramatic meanings in the play.
