초록
Abstract
Ethical dative is often considered an superfluous element. It is widely assumed that it is difficult to characterize it in grammatical terms. This study aims to provide a formal analysis of phenomena related to person of ethical dative, which is the most prominent feature in its behavior, such as person selection, the violation of the Person Case Constraint (PCC), and linearization in clitic strings. I propose that the combination of an exclamative operator with the functional category High Applicative composes the semantics of this non-argument dative, which necessarily denotes emotional or psychological impact. This leads to the limitation of its use to first and second persons and the violation of the PCC. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the position of ethical dative, which varies according to the person of the clitics with which it appears, is determined by a post-syntactic movement operation, namely, local dislocation.
