Abstract

This paper explores the interplay between narrative and image in the Tsukinami Fūzokuzu Byōbu (Genre Scenes of the Twelve Months), focusing on the Ōtaue(rice-planting) ritual depicted in its third and fourth panels. While the screen exhibits strong medieval traits, such as the prominent hunting scene featuring samurai figures, iconographic analysis reveals distinct and unexpected connections with Heian-period literature. The composition resonates with scenes from Heian-period literature, where interactions between aristocrats and commoners are vividly portrayed. Examples include the landscape observed during a visit to the Kamo Shrine in The Pillow Book, the procession of rice planting and dengaku performers in the “Mogi” chapter of Eiga Monogatari, and the snow play scenes in the “Asagao” chapter and the Ono landscape in the “Yūgiri” and “Ukifune” chapters of The Tale of Genji. Through these correspondences, the study argues that the Tsukinami Fūzokuzu Byōbu, despite its medieval style, consciously embodies the enduring Heian narrative sensibility that continued to shape cultural imagination in later periods.
