Abstract
A Study on the Discourse Constructed by Japan’s Professional Soccer League, the J.League: Focusing on the Boundary between Localism and Nationalism. This paper examines how Japan’s professional football league, the J.League, has shaped social and cultural discourses since its inception in 1993, focusing on the dynamic relationship between localism and nationalism. Established as a community-based league uniting local governments, corporations, and citizens, the J.League has promoted regional identity and social cohesion. At the same time, football has served as a means of reproducing nationalism, particularly through international competitions, such as the World Cup. Drawing on both structuralist and culturalist frameworks, this study analyzes how the J.League’s discourse functions within these intersecting forces. The findings reveal a dual structure in which autonomous local practices simultaneously reinforce national imagination. The case studies of Shimizu, Urawa, and Oita illustrate how attachment to local clubs cultivates civic pride, which merges with national identity. Ultimately, the J.League operates as a cultural mediator between local and national spheres, exemplifying how sports can serve as a site of social creativity and subtle resistance within contemporary Japanese society.
