Abstract

This study attempts to complement two contrasting perspectives on the role of the family regarding children's educational achievement. Bourdieu(1996) sees the family as the source of differential educational achievement by children. In contrast, Coleman(1988) emphasizes the function of the family as social capital gained by intergenerational closure within the family or school community. It helps to create children's human capital. Two perspectives attend to different consequences of parent-child social relations within the family but both underscore the role of parent-child social relations within the family. Through an empirical data analysis, this study shows how the effects of parent-child social relations within the family on children's educational outcome depend on the position of the family in socioeconomic hierarchy. Rather than simply looking at the effect of structural variables reflecting family background (e.g. level of parents' education) on children's educational outcome, this study tries to find the process in which those variables influence the educational achievement of children by using the data from the first wave of Korean Education and Employment Panel. Results show that the influence of parent-child social relations within the family on children's educational outcome varies according to the location of the family in the socioeconomic hierarchy. The finding also shows that children's family background interacts with school teacher's perception on children. Findings in this study hints that Bourdieu's perspective on the family as the source of unequal children's educational achievement may complement Coleman's functional emphasis on the role of the family in the creation of children's human capital.
