Abstract

This paper examines the distortion in the representation of Ryukyuans and their perception of assimilation into Japan, centered on Hirotsu Kazuo’s Short Story “Wandering Ryukyuans,” which highlights the lives of Ryukyuans who left their native Okinawa and settled in mainland Japan around the time of the Great Kanto Earthquake. Hirotsu, a progressive writer, had a reflective awareness of the economic hardships faced by the Ryukyuans, as well as the discrimination and persecution imposed by Japan. In “Wandering Ryukyuans,” he introduces two Ryukyuan characters to question the imperialistic and colonial nature of Japan-Okinawa relations, and seeks to understand with affection the betrayal of Ryukyuans who resort to self-deception and economic fraud for survival. However, despite such goodwill and sympathetic views, the novel reveals the inescapable ethnic and racial hierarchies and discriminatory perspectives at the unconscious level, even for progressive writers. This misalignment or distortion between conscious and unconscious levels is also examined in terms of how Ryukyuans are depicted. Despite the author’s conscious goodwill and sympathy, the depiction of Ryukyuans often resorts to animalistic portrayals, reflecting the colonial settlers’ persistent sense of civilizational superiority over the colonized populace. The Ryukyuans themselves struggled with identity crises following the forced annexation by Japan. Although there is the limitation of being written by a Japanese author, the work contextually helps understand the anxiety and internalized fear experienced by Ryukyuans in mainland Japan around the time of the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake.
