Abstract
This study aimed to examine how emotional recognition competence, defined as the ability of adolescents to accurately recognize others’ emotional signals, moderates the effect of negative parenting attitude on peer relationship quality through depression. To this end, data from the fourth wave of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018 (KCYPS 2018) targeting first-year middle school students and collected when they were in their first year of high school (N = 2,265) were analyzed. The results were as follows. First, significant correlations were found among negative parenting attitude, emotional recognition competence, depression, and peer relationship quality. Second, depression significantly mediated the relationship between negative parenting attitude and peer relationship quality. Third, emotional recognition competence significantly moderated the relationship between negative parenting attitude and depression. Fourth, the moderating effect of emotional recognition competence was also significant in the relationship between negative parenting attitude and peer relationship quality. Fifth, the mediated moderation effect of emotional recognition competence was significant in the relationship between negative parenting attitudes and peer relationship quality via depression, and, in addition, the moderating effect of emotional recognition competence on the relationship between negative parenting attitudes and peer relationship quality was also significant. These results suggest that emotional recognition competence functions as a moderating variable in both direct and indirect paths. This study is meaningful in that it empirically confirms that emotional recognition competence serves as a protective factor mitigating the psychosocial effects of negative parenting attitude, and provides empirical grounds for the development and implementation of school and community-based programs (e.g., social-emotional learning, empathy training) aimed at enhancing emotional recognition competence.
