Abstract
This study aimed to examine the longitudinal mediating effects of depression and smartphone dependency in the relationship between negative parenting attitudes and adolescents’ peer relationships. For the analyses, a structural equation model incorporating autoregressive cross-lagged modeling was conducted using data from Waves 4 to 6 of the 2018 Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) with the 4th-grade elementary school cohort. The results showed that negative parenting attitudes had significant positive effects on adolescents’depression and smartphone dependency. Second, both depression and smartphone dependency exhibited stable autoregressive effects over the study period. Regarding the longitudinal reciprocal relationship between depression and smartphone dependency, smartphone dependency at the previous time significantly predicted depression at the later point, whereas depression at the previous time did not significantly affect subsequent smartphone dependency. Third, adolescents’depression and smartphone dependency significantly mediated the longitudinal relationship between negative parenting attitudes and peer relationships. These findings suggest that adolescent depression and smartphone dependency serve as key mediators linking early negative parenting experiences to peer relationship formation. Based on these results, this study discusses implications for adolescent welfare policies and practices, emphasizing the need for early intervention strategies and parent-focused preventive efforts.
