Abstract

This study was carried out to investigate the patterns of alpha and beta species diversity and their drivers for plant communities on a long-term riparian forest research site in Mt. Gyebang, Gwangwon Province. A total of 189 plant species belonging to 61 families and 126 genera were recorded from field survey. Polypodiaceae and Ranunculaceae were the most frequently observed in 15 species respectively. As a results of analysis of diversity patterns and the drivers, the most important factor to predict alpha diversity of overstory and understory vegetation were slope and wetness index, respectively. Beta diversity was found to have significant relationships with both the distance between plots and environmental distance but the relative importance was different among forest strata. In other words, the environmental distancewas more important in the overstory vegetation, whereas distance between plots was more important in the understory vegetation. This study suggests that diversity patterns and the drivers of plant community may be different among forest strata and that a combined interaction of different mechanisms from overstory and understory strata influences plant community formation on a riparian forest in Mt. Gyebang, South Korea.
