Abstract
In this study, we examined the elevational patterns of plant species richness and the relativeimportance of climatic and topographic factors on the observed richness patterns from theNamgyori to the Daecheongbong Peak on the Mt. Seorak, South Korea. A total of 211 plantspecies belonging to 71 families and 147 genera were recorded along the transect. Of these plantspecies, woody and herbaceous plants were 91(43%) and 120(57%) species, respectively. Therichness patterns of woody and herbaceous species along the elevational gradient showedmonotonic decreasing and increasing patterns, respectively. From the results of regression models, climatic and topographic factors simultaneously influenced on the richness patterns of woody andherbaceous plants. However, variation partitioning for assessing the relative importance of the twofactors revealed that climatic and topographic factors were more important for woody andherbaceous plants, respectively. Our results suggest that the richness patterns of plant species andthe underlying mechanism may be different between plant groups such as woody and herbaceousplants along the elevational gradient on the Mt. Seorak, South Korea.
