Abstract
This systematic literature review examines the potential of Educational Technology (EdTech) to mitigate educational inequality in the K-12 system while exploring the complex interactions between these phenomena. A total of 39 peer-reviewed articles were analyzed, focusing on educational contexts, research methodologies, conceptualizations of EdTech and inequality, and their interplay. The review addressed the critical question: Does EdTech resolve educational inequality? Studies revealed bidirectional influences: EdTech affects inequality, while pre-existing inequities shape EdTech practices across individuals, schools, and regions. Quantitative and mixed-methods approaches predominated, highlighting interactions between structural, contextual, and personal inequality factors and dimensions of EdTech access, use, and outcomes. Certain variables acted as either mitigating or exacerbating factors depending on context. These findings indicate that EdTech practices emerge from intertwined complex variables, necessitating a shift beyond technology-centric perspectives toward examining intersections of multiple inequality factors in learners’ real-world experiences. Due to the topic’s breadth and complexity, definitive conclusions remain limited. Future research should include in-depth qualitative or mixed-methods case studies in specific contexts or broader scoping reviews to capture evolving trends in this field.
