Abstract
As Korean society rapidly transitions into a multicultural society, the landscape of Korean religion is also changing. From ancient times to the present, foreign religions have been introduced into the Korean Peninsula and have become part of Korean religion through localization. For example, Buddhism, Confucianism, Catholicism, and Protestantism are representative cases. This phenomenon can still be witnessed at present. Islam is likely to become the fourth largest religion in Korea. This is because, with the increase in Muslim immigrants, changes in the religious population are also appearing in local communities, and new issues related to religions are emerging. Dissimilarly, indigenous religions that have arisen in Korea are also establishing themselves as part of the landscape of Korean religions. A representative example is Daesoon Jinrihoe. This study focuses on Daesoon Jinrihoe among domestic religious organizations and aims to examine how this organization perceives immigrants and how it responds to them, in order to derive the current situation and challenges. This is significant because studying how Korea’s indigenous religions perceive and respond to foreign religions or immigrants provides crucial information for understanding changes in the landscape of Korean religions. To achieve the purpose of this study, the background and basis of how Daesoon Jinrihoe perceives immigrants will be examined through sources such as The Canonical Scripture and Daesoon Bulletin. Also explored are how activities for immigrants can be made manifest by reviewing related articles, and this study has an aim of deriving characteristics and challenges through comparisons with other religious organizations. Furthermore, this study will suggest ways in which the roles of religion and government can complement each other for coexistence with immigrants in the community, and Daesoon Jinrihoe will be upheld as an example.
