Abstract
This article aims to examine the worldview of the ‘Samgye (三界: Three Realms)’ in Daesoon Thought by comparing it with related concepts found in Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism, as an integrated approach to understanding the key religious themes of human beings, heaven and earth, and divine beings. The Buddhist notion of the Three Realms can be understood as a worldview that reflects the framework of Buddhist thought, which places the mind at its center, and explains the stages of enlightenment. In Daoism, a multi-layered celestial world inhabited by various deities is embedded within the worldview of the Three Realms. While the realms may reflect human and divine states of being, they also faintly suggest a distinction between unique types in the context of Heaven (天), Earth (地), and Humanity (人). In Confucianism, the worldview of the Samjae (三才: Three Powers) is presented, which emphasizes the categorical distinctions among Heaven, Earth, and Humanity. The Daoist conception of the Three Realms presupposes a hierarchical differentiation among deities, while the Confucian conception of the Samjae is classified primarily on the basis of attributes. In this respect, both stand in contrast to the Three Realms worldview of Daesoon Thought. In Daesoon Thought, the categorical boundaries of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity combine with the realms of divine spirits and humans to manifest as the worldview of the Samgye. This worldview can be understood not as a hierarchical distinction of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity, but as an integration based on two complementary aspects that constitute the real world. Ultimately, the worldview of the Samgye holds that the Heaven, Earth, and Humanity realms share divine values, thereby establishing a basis for communication among them. The doctrinal content of Daesoon Thought, which aims at the communication among the Samgye fully embodies this concept. The study of the Samgye worldview in Daesoon Thought, as an integrated worldview encompassing human beings, Heaven and Earth, and the divine, can hold significant meaning.
