Abstract

Uro’s wife searched for her husband’s body. People feared the abandonment of a body without a funeral more than death. A funeral can be held only with a body, and the dead are meant to be supported by their descendants. The dead can find peace in the grave if a body is abandoned. Uro’s wife chose the last resort. She approached a Japanese man who knew where her husband was buried and offered to give him her body. He told her the location. She had someone kill the Japanese man and found her husband’s body. Then, she dug up the ground to hold the funeral. She threw the Japanese man’s body into it. Uro was placed on top of the Japanese corpse. The Japanese had to live as Uro’s slaves forever. In 668, King Munmu destroyed Goguryeo. Upon returning to Silla, King Munmu visited his ancestors’ tombs and expressed his gratitude. “I could not have won the war with the help of my ancestors.” In 687, King Sinmun confessed to his ancestors at the tomb. “The heavens see that I am not doing my duty and justice is being distorted. Strange events are appearing and the sun and stars are losing their light. Thus, I am terrified and afraid. It is as if I am falling into a deep pond or valley.” Earlier, on the day the prince was born, the king was shocked when dark clouds gathered in the middle of the day, lightning struck, and a loud noise resonated. King Wonseong (785–798) claimed that his dead father had given him the flute of peace from the gods. In 794, King Wonseong built a temple for King Jinji. It is highly likely that King Wonseong was a descendant of King Jinji by bloodline. This article will examine how King Wonseong’s lineage led to King Munmu, the owner of the flute of peace. Many ritual tools have been discovered in Silla tombs. This is evidence that the Silla people believed that the dead participate in ancestral rites as both objects of worship and beings who offer sacrifices. When King Wonseong performed a ritual for his father, Myeongdeok, his father performed a ritual for his grandfather, Heungpyeong, who then performed a ritual for his maternal uncle, King Munmu. Then, King Munmu gave the peace flute to his nephew, Heungpyeong, who then passed it on to his son, Myeongdeok. Finally, Myeongdeok gave the peace flute to his living son, King Wonseong. The Silla people believed in this order of sacrifice and the passing down of the peace flute. That is why King Wonseong could claim that he received the flute from his dead father. Descendants broke down the barrier between this world and the next, communicated with their dead ancestors, and determined the direction of their lives.
